Social Justice Fair at the 2011 Youth Convergence
Would your organization like face time with 100 youth gathered for a weekend of activism and commitment? If so, it should participate in the Social Justice Fair at the Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition 2011 Be the Change Youth Convergence July 29-31, 2011.
American Friends Service Committee and the Georgia Peace & Justice Coalition are excited to invite your organization to participate in our 3rd annual “Be the Change Youth Convergence.” The convergence is a crash course in community organizing that’s grounded in Dr. Martin Luther King’s Beyond Vietnam speech. Young people (ages 13-24) learn about the connections between systems of violence and oppression in their communities and the tools to create the changes they want to see in Georgia. Young attendees work together to create a 12-month statewide campaign around an issue important to them.
The convergence is a great opportunity for your organization to reach out to young folks from all over the state. We expect around 100 youth and 20-30 volunteers to be present.
The Social Justice Fair is all day Saturday July 30th, but it will be especially busy from 11am to 1pm, when the kids are going to be having breaks and lunch. The event is at Horizons School: 1900 Dekalb Avenue Northeast, Atlanta, GA.
So that youth from all economic backgrounds can have this learning opportunity, we are asking groups that want to table to make a suggested donation of $50-$200 (if you would like to eat lunch with us, please include a bit extra). $50 will provide a scholarship for one young person who couldn’t otherwise afford to come. We will try to be flexible in accepting donations, e.g. in-kind donations of food and other materials that we will need to make the convergence happen. If you support the conference by making this donation, we will include your group in our literature as a sponsor.
We want conference attendees to see that there is a vibrant community of dedicated people working on issues important to them, waiting for them to get involved. So I hope you are able to come and contribute your work and your voice to that demonstration! More information about the convergence can be found here. Please contact Dell MacLean at 404-939-7699 or email
BeTheChange@gapeace.org to sign up or discuss the convergence.
